Rock and fluid samples

Samples are portions of rock, sediment or fluid extracted from wells, the surface of the seabed or the land surface. The procedures for collecting and handling samples in Brazilian sedimentary basins are defined in ANP Resolution No. 71/2014.

 

The following samples are collected as part of the activities of oil and gas exploration and production in Brazilian sedimentary basins, and are subject to regulation and control by the ANP:

 

  1. Drill cores and their plugs;;
  2. Feed frame samples;
  3. Side samples;
  4. Fluid samples;
  5. Rocks or sediments obtained from land or seabed surveys..
  6. Slender and biostratigraphic laminae, and polished sections;
  7. Drill core logging;
  8. Analytical data generated from public samples.

 

The ANP is responsible for the custody and maintenance of all the samples and by-products listed above and received by it. Until the delivery of the samples to the ANP, their carriers are responsible for their care and maintenance.

 

Whereas the ANP does not have a permanent structure for receiving these samples the companies responsible for acquiring them are their custodians. The ANP carries out the control of these samples through inspections and document and field control, and ensures application of the rules established for access to public samples.

 

  • Access to samples

    Access to ANP´s rock and fluid samples is limited to individuals resident in Brazil and legal entities incorporated under Brazilian law, with headquarters and administration in the country, and regularly registered in the ANP (before requesting access to samples, it is necessary to make a registration in the ANP, called "Requesters Registration - CSOL"). Samples requisition must be made by letter, sent to the ANP together with the Sample Access Request Form - SAA. Forms are available on the following link Upon receiving the request, the ANP performs an availability survey with companies that are custodians of public samples, and passes the information and cost estimate via email to the requester in order to approve or reject continuation of the request. Access to the Federal Government collection, when not held by the ANP, is subject to strict cost recovery by the custodians of these samples. The ANP publishes specific procedure, with its costs, for accessing samples of rocks and fluids that are held in its own depository. The Agency may provide, free of charge, samples from the Federal Government collection to universities, research institutions, agency or entity of the public administration, whether direct or indirect, federal, state, county or municipal. Such samples must be used for academic or research purposes, and may not be used for commercial purposes, either directly or indirectly. Relevant legislation:

  • Results of sample analysis

    All authorized access to public samples of rocks and fluids in ANP's collection generates a Sample Analysis Report (RAA), which must be sent by the user within 180 days after completion of the access, and which contains all results (in digital format).

    The RAA includes the results of descriptions, analysis information and photographs obtained from the samples accessed. A suggestion of guide for the preparation of the RAA is periodically updated in "Guidelines to Concession holders / Contractors", according to the RRAE available in

    The consolidation of the public information sent via the Annual Collection Statements (AADs) is published annually on the ANP website every December, since 2015.

    See below the main types of rock and fluid samples that can be accessed with the ANP:

    Plug

    Fractions, generally of cylindrical shape, obtained from drill cores and normally used in petrophysical assays for determining the porosity and permeability of a reservoir rock. The operator collects as many horizontal plugs as it deems necessary, provided there is between them a minimum distance of 30 (thirty) centimeters, measured along the axis of the drill core, and that the diameter of these plugs does not exceed two (2) inches. And also, a vertical plug no greater than eight (8) centimeters in length and two (2) inches in diameter, for each meter measured from the beginning of the drill core. The request for removal of nonstandard plugs set out above must be submitted to the ANP through the specific form (SAFP) available on the ANP website (colocar link). The plugs collected from a drill core must be delivered to the ANP as provided in the current regulation, except those plugs demonstrably subjected to destructive analysis.

    Feed Frame Samples

    Sample obtained by the drill's work while drilling the well. This type of sample comes to the surface by the circulation of the drilling mud. The ANP may authorize, after a technically justified prior request by the party concerned, the removal of feed frame samples at odds with the established procedures. The request for withdrawal of feed frame samples outside the standard established in this article must be forwarded to the ANP through the specific form (SAFP) available at the ANP web portal (colocar link).

    Laminae

    Biostratigraphic: lamina type that is prepared with special techniques for preservation, concentration and recovery of the fossil content of a rock. The analysis of such laminae is intended primarily to relative dating and the determination of the sedimentation's paleoenvironment. Slender: lamina type that is prepared with rock fragments polished to achieve thin thickness, and aimed at observation of light transmitted under petrographic microscope (fitted with adaptations for microscopic analysis of rocks). Both are aimed at determining the mineral content of rocks and their microstructures.

    Side samples

    Samples obtained from the wall of the well, with approximately cylindrical shape, whose obtainment is intended to preserve the structure of the rock and provide certainty as to the depth of the extraction.

    Fluids

    Substances that do not exert resistance to tangential or shear forces, continuously deforming and taking the shape of the container in which it is contained. Examples: water, gas and oil.

    Drill core

    Substances that do not exert resistance to tangential or shear forces, continuously deforming and taking the shape of the container in which it is contained. Examples: water, gas and oil.

  • ANP´s Rocks and Fluids Center

    ANP´s Rocks and Fluids Center (CRF) will be installed in an area of approximately 46,000 m² in Xerém, Duque de Caxias (RJ), on land provided by the Federal Heritage Department. The unit will have capacity to store the entire Federal Government samples collection, comprising 385,000 boxes of rock samples, mainly feed frame samples and drill cores, size 100cm x 14cm x 14cm.

    Currently, these boxes are distributed in various units of the Federation, in possession of operator companies, which are, today, their custodians. ANP's strategy is to keep the collection spatially decentralized, concentrating in the CRF the boxes from the basins of Campos, Santos and Espírito Santo. The collections of the other basins will be allocated in lithoteques of the Mineral Resources Research Company (CPRM), throughout Brazil, via cooperation agreement.

    The Agency is in the process of hiring services for topography and survey of the area, to subsequently conduct a national architecture competition to choose the draft that will subsidize the hiring of basic projects and execution of the works (in line with the stipulations of Law 8666/93, article 13, § 1).
