One deep water
sector is being offered in Pelotas Basin,
with 33 blocks, with an area of 21,360.48
km². This basin is located in the
extreme southern of the Brazilian continental
margin, from Uruguay in the south to
the Santos Basin in the north. Its area
is approximately 210,000 km², to
the 2,000m bathymetric contour. The
exploration effort thus far can be summarized
as 21 wells, 11 of which were stratigraphic,
and 9 onshore tests. The most recent
well was drilled in 2001 and today there
are no concessions in this basin.
It is absent the evaporitic section
and the basin prospectivity has to be
better evaluated. Potential prospects
are mainly cretaceous and tertiary turbidites
and Albian sandstones and carbonates,
in stratigraphic and structural traps.
Subordinate targets are Barremian/Aptian
and Paleozoic (?) prospects in more
proximal and shallower parts of the
basin.
